How to Spot a Roofing Scam in Little Rock After a Hail Storm

Published August 14, 2026

Every spring, hail rolls through Central Arkansas and right behind it comes a wave of door-knocking "roofers" you've never heard of.  Some are legitimate.  Many are storm chasers: out-of-town crews who follow severe weather, collect deposits, do rushed or shoddy work (or none at all), and leave town before the problems show up. Here's how to tell the difference.

Why Do Roofing Scams Spike After Arkansas Storms?

Storm chasers target neighborhoods with fresh, visible hail damage because homeowners are stressed, insurance money is in motion, and decisions get made fast. A scammer doesn't need to fool you forever — just long enough to collect a 25–30% deposit or an insurance check. By the time the tarp leaks or the shingles start lifting, the truck with out-of-state plates is three states away.

What Are the Biggest Red Flags?

  • They showed up uninvited. Reputable Little Rock roofers stay busy through referrals and scheduled inspections. A stranger at your door claiming they "noticed damage from the street" is the single most common opening move of a storm-chaser scam.
  • Pressure to sign today. "This price is only good right now" is a sales tactic, not a deadline. A legitimate contractor gives you time — 48 to 72 hours at minimum — to compare written estimates.
  • A big cash deposit up front. Demands for 25–30% down in cash, or full payment before work starts are classic scam mechanics.

  • They offer to "cover your deductible." In Arkansas, a contractor offering to waive or absorb your insurance deductible is a red flag for insurance fraud. It can put you, the homeowner, at legal risk too.

  • No local address, no verifiable license. Out-of-state plates, a cell number with no office, and vague answers about licensing all point the same direction.

Is a License Required to Roof a House in Arkansas?

Yes. Since 2022, anyone performing residential roofing work over $2,000 in Arkansas must be registered with the Residential Building Contractors Committee, which requires a $15,000 surety bond and proof of workers' compensation coverage. You can verify any contractor with the Arkansas Contractors Licensing Board at (501) 372-4661 or through their online lookup before you sign anything. If a "roofer" isn't in the system, that conversation is over.

How Do I Vet a Roofer the Right Way?

Five checks, in order:

  1. Verify registration with the Arkansas Contractors Licensing Board.
  2. Ask for proof of insurance — both liability and workers' comp. A real company produces certificates without hesitation.
  3. Get everything in writing.  The bid should include scope of work, materials being used, price, and timeline before any money changes hands.
  4. Get at least two estimates. Wild price differences tell you something.
  5. Never pay in full up front. A modest deposit tied to a written contract is normal; "cash today" is not.

What If the Damage Is Real and I Need Help Fast?

Real hail damage does need prompt attention. Waiting invites leaks and bigger repair bills. The answer isn't to ignore the damage; it's to call someone local who will still be here next year.
